License plate mounting

I picked up a rusty tailgate for parts yesterday from Billy(66burban) and in trying to get the license plate bracket off, I noticed it is held on with clutch head bolts. Who sells a bit to remove them?

Paul,
Try Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply, Ace and auto parts stores...

Thanks. The panel is small enough so I can take it with me. Just have to watch the sharp edges

You might find a clutch head screwdriver at Napa but not at HF, Tractor Supply or Ace Hardware. You might even have to purchase online.

If I recall, I think my local Ace actually had one too.

I have a question for you, 65. My 'burb has the bracket for the top of the plate, and 2 holes in the gate for the bottom of the bracket, but I don't think there are captive bolts in those bottom holes -- how does the bottom of the plate fasten down?

it doesn't. It just "hangs" there and vibrates around. My dad drilled two holes that match the license plate through the lower door, and ran 2 carriage bolts from the inside out, and put star washers and acorn nuts on it and the license plate frame. when I get home, I will take a picture of it to show you what it looks like. This way the plate doesn't drop when I lower the tailgate.

My mistake. I started with carriage bolts but went to standard bolts so I can put a wrench on it. Hope this helps

Re: License plate mounting

i used 2 nylon headlight adjustment nuts, with a large headed phillips thru the plate. years later when the nylon dried out and cracked i replaced them with plastic drywall anchors and the same screws.

Drywall anchors is a very clever idea!

I never thought of those

Re: License plate mounting

I also use drywall anchors to secure my door scuff plates because a few of the holes are enlarged due to rust.
