How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
I have a 1970 C10 built in Atlanta. Engine is blue not orange, stamp on block says '3970010'. I also used a book on how to rebuild carbs and have linked that serial number to a 1977 Corvette. Is this accurate or does anyone else have additional info or tips for me?

Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
Need to get numbers off the front of the block, pass side right where block/head surface.

Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
Look here for your suffix code CKH.
http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-2.php And if you look here you'll find your casting number which shows your block number. http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm And no, you don't have a 302 or 327. |
Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
3970010 was the most mass produced 4" bore block GM ever made. So the numbers and suffix code on the front of the passenger side head will tell you everything you want to know.
If it's "corporate blue" from the factory it was originally installed in a 1975ish or later vehicle. If it has a long water pump and the alternator on the passenger side, then it didn't come in 1970. All 67-72 V8 trucks had short water pumps and alternator on drivers side. Gary |
Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
In the end it was a 350 SB built for a 77 Monte Carlo at the Doraville, Georgia Plant. Going to swap in a 67 396 big block that was built in Tonawanda for a 67 Chevelle that from what i can tell from the engine codes was assembled in Los Angeles.

HHmmmm.... 67 396 Chevelle.... smells like an SS motor. those came from the factory juiced. Good choice. |
Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
Does your 67 396 casting number end in 406 ? or 323 ?
|
Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
406 - does that make it a SS?
|
Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
No. It depends on the suffix found on the deck of the block. The 406 casting was a one year only casting of 1967. Most of these blocks were cast in the later months of 66 and first 6 months of 67 than GM went to the 323 casting.

Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
In 1967 at Van Nuys (LA) what cars did they build, my VIN code on the engine is L7156193. The engine was form Tonawanda T0316IV? The IV is only telling me it was a Chevrolet and was an automatic.

Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
Big Block IV comes up as 65-68 auto 325hp
|
Re: How can i tell exactly where my engine came from
I bet it is a 2 bolt main block too, 396 325hp engine. 406 casting. What is the casting date on the block ? Only great thing going here is that if its a 406 casting, GM did not make a lot of them. most likely it came in a Impala.
Do you have the heads on it ? What is the casting for the heads ? What are the casting dates on each head ? Do you have the forged steel crank ? |
