Winding noise coming from transmission
I have a winding noise coming from my 3 speed transmission, I believe it is the original. I checked the fluid and it seems to be at the proper level. I was wondering if any of you guys would have any thoughts on the noise. The truck is a 1951 chevy 3600 with a 1961 235 engine

I think they all had a whine... part of the experience.

Worn bearings worn gears or a combination there of. The trans in my 77 1 ton makes that kind of sound and will have to be rebuilt.

Re: Winding noise coming from transmission
If it is noisy in the lower gears & not high gear, it is probably a bearing. Usually the front drive bearing. It is probably needing an o-haul but if you remove it & pull the front brg. retainer, you can examine the bearing for pits or roughness. It can be replaced without a complete disasemble.

Thanks guys, I might try the front bearing first and see if that helps. I was thinking it might be a bearing.
