Where to find custom spray paint in factory colors
I would like to buy a couple of cans of spray paint in my factory color. Currently I have a 69GMC custom camper with the 525 Saddle Poly paint. I have been digging around on the web but I don't see anybody that offers this color in spray cans.
I am trying to save the cost and labor on a full paint job so I plan on just touching up inside of the cab and under the hood as needed. The exterior will be getting a new coat of paint once the rust repairs are finished. Is there anybody out there that has had factory paint made up in a spray can VIA a company that has a web store?? Thanks |

I would go to your local autobody supply and have them use their camera to custom make some for you. Even though it's in the interior the paint will have faded over time, what would be factory correct will probably be a different shade than whats on your truck.

You won’t be able to get any mixed here in California locally, that’s why I posted a link to mail order from that website. Been there, done that ;)

Re: Where to find custom spray paint in factory colors
Just yesterday my local NAPA guy mixed me a pint of the 1970 only color called "Dark Gold Poly". As long as I had the code, he can mix it. Let me know if you run into a bind. I'll have you give him a call to order what you want, and I'll ship it to you. There's more than one way to skin this cat!

Re: Where to find custom spray paint in factory colors
In the not too distant past, I was able to buy medium lacquer thinner over the internet, delivered to my home in California. That loophole now appears to be closed, at that source. Oh, well. I painted the roof of my truck, before I put the new shell on, mainly because the new shell is a cab over. I used some California-legal "enamel" that worked just great, and the coverage was truly excellent. It had a catalyst, so I bought a Tyvek suit and got a respirator package for it, so that I didn't die when I painted it. It used to be I could spray my vehicle in the driveway with lacquer. I wish I had pics of how nice some of some of those cars looked, especially my '56 210 wagon and my '64 Impala convertible. They were as sweet as cupcakes, in the paint department. Bats out of "HE Double Hockey Sticks, in the performance department. :metal:

I was -expecting- someone to rush out with a color-sensinng digital imager to perfectly scan my existing paint and kick out a formula. That didn't happen. But if you know the Ditzler code, you could get it mixed up into spray cans at least, I think. So it's just lazy/skill, not environmental in my case. |
Re: Where to find custom spray paint in factory colors
Tower Paint is great for exactly this. I used it on my past two projects for touchup. I even sent in the glove box off my projects to get a closer match to the original paint and they nailed it. I used their single stage lacquer spray and the finish was very nice. It handled cutting and buffing as well. After blending with the original paint, I couldn't tell where the original paint ended and the new paint started.

I had some paint mixed for my truck that is 503 Light Green or a variation of it. The color-sensing digital thingy they have reads the color and try's to match it to the closest color in the database that they have a formula for. It's strange, you would think it could read the color and come up with a formula that matched. I wanted acrylic enamel because the outside of my truck is done in it and I was doing some underhood work and some wheels soon. Apparently they have a lot more formulas for Base Coat/Clear Coat paint because they tried to push me that direction and there are supposedly more tints they can use on BC/CC...something like 28 for BC/CC and 12 for Acrylic Enamel. Anyway they were super nice and I left them a fender and they got extremely close. I bought a quart that was only about $50 so it wasn't a huge money maker for them. |

I ordered some from automotive touch up for my 68 gmc and it matches great.
