Steering column raised dimples question

Do these raised dimples serve any purpose? I might need to flatten them to get a lokar shift linkage bracket to fit correctly but I don't want to mess up any internals if they need raised. Thanks for any input you might have.

Re: Steering column raised dimples question

Maybe to at least slow down the column housing from pushing into the cab in a crash?

(I know it seems unlikely but at least this will give your thread a bump with no one chiming in yet).

The column shaft itself has the rag joint and universal so that would be separate and should flex out of the way but I'm thinking just as a stop for the column housing itself?

Maybe I have the direction wrong because I cannot tell from the photo..

Those bumps line up with the mounting bracket on the firewall. At least on mine they do.

Makes sense to be a safety stop possibly. Thank for the input guys.

Chewy has it right. They are locators for the firewall bracket.

Why does the Lokar shifter connect to the column?
Seems like the most indirect method of shifting the transmission....
