Help with fixing rust.
 

Driver side floor. Visible when you open the door. Best way to approach?? Can it be something that I can learn and do at home or best for a shop to do?? Not shown in the pictures but I can see the ground through the rusted area.

Common fix. Just look at others builds and there are usually pictures of this repair. Thats how I learned to fix mine.

On Youtube under "C10 Rocker Panel Replacement" there are a few good how to videos.

I would consider myself a beginner and I would try to tackle this project if it was my truck.

Slap on some bondo, sand it down, spray paint, and you're good for another 40 years. :lol:

Do you know how to weld? Do you have a MIG welder, a garage, space to do this? Do you have experience welding sheet metal?

These are the questions only you can answer.

I have this same job coming up at some point (original owner had it bondo'ed) but I'll end up hiring it done.

You're mixed up again Ten Ring! You don't wait 40 years, as soon as you are done painting over the bondo fix you immediately take it to Barret Jackson... Collect $75,000 from a drunk with too much money! :lol:

The new thing is... only do a good fix if you're keeping it! Otherwise it's patina! :smoke:

Every fix I do, even the temporary ones (which I sometimes have to do) I do with the intention of those outlasting me by at least 100 years. Clearly I'll never get rich with this mentality.

Look at my "Rebuild of Creeping Death" build thread. Link is in my signature line. The metal cutting started on page #7. I have never done body work or sheet metal work of any kind. But I can weld and have a nice welding rig. So I tackled all the cab rust/rot out of my 1972 GMC. I detailed all the trials and tribulations in my build thread.

One thing I will tell you... the rust you see is only a fraction of the rust you have. So be prepared to replace the entire inner rockers (cab floor extensions), outer rockers, part of the floor, cab corners, front and rear lower pillars, front and rear cab supports, and kick panels. It was a lot of work and I learned a lot. It took me quite a while, but my rig isn't my daily and my work schedule sucks. If you get stuck, stop and ask. I have a couple local cats on speed dial on my phone that really helped me out to explain things as I went along. :)

I’ve been working on similar rust for the first time on my blazer and two things that I have learned stand out.

There is almost certainly more rust that will need repaired than you can see.
To do it right is very time consuming

I spent hours looking at rust repair on this site and you tube trying to learn as much as i could before I started
I also practiced welding sheet metal on a damaged cab to get some experience before I started on mine

If you have a welder and some basic mechanical skills the the hardest part (at least for me) is finding the time and just taking the leap and diving into it

Maybe I’m a little weird but I’m having a great time with it too
