84 K30 496 engine swap...what all should I change?

I’ve had a 496 engine that Mark at Vortec Pro built for me back in 2010. It’s been sitting on my engine stand for about 4 years after pulling it out of another truck I have.

The truck it’s going in (84 K30 454) has a SM465 transmission, the previous truck (76 C35) was an automatic (TH400).

I was going to order some Hedman (ceramic coated) Hedders, motor mounts, transmission mounts, clutch kit.
Anything else I’m forgetting?

Any feedback or opinions are welcome...

Pilot bearing.
New one would be good if you already got one.

Some type traction device and big tires!! I swapped a mild 454 in a truck I built and would smoke the tires off.

I am going to assume that your 496 is an 8.1 liter engine?
I have heard and am asking does the engine block have mounts for the starter?
If it doesn't then you will have to find a bell housing with a mount built in.
I am asking as I'm also thinking I want to do the same.

Is the 496 externally balanced the same as a 454 is? Was the engine balanced when built with the flexplate installed? If so, changing the flexplate to a flywheel will somewhat disturb the balance of the engine.

I’m mistaken; it’s a 468 build. A bit to many things going on and my simple mind doesn’t hold data like it used to ;)

Thanks Capt, as per the builder I think my task is to find a stock, un modified 454 flywheel for my project. Thank you for the question.

I only get to mess with my stuff occasionally, sometimes it’s months before I get back in the shop to tear stuff up

Seems like a huge waste of horsepower in front of a 465 manual trans. Not like you can speed shift that beast or keep it in the power band with the wide ratios. Of course the power band is subjective with the amount of torque

It’s just a fun project is all. Didn’t need to make sense ;)
