Blitz Black, Hot Rod Flatz, ??

So I'm thinking about repainting my '79 in a Satin finish.

I know that I REALLY like the look of the John Deere Blitz Black, and it is cheap, easy, tough and somewhat safe(er) to spray. But... gotta strip it all off if I ever re-paint. Just not sure I ever would.

Hot Rod Flatz is a single stage Urethane, looks good (when sprayed right) but not too cool to breathe the fumes. And I have heard it is not super easy to spray, and a number of reviews say it's crappy. But can be painted over and it's Auto Paint.

Of course there's Rustoleum Satin. Also has to be stripped if repainted.

Who has experience with either?

no experience with either paint ...but wear a respirator if youre spraying paint..no matter what kind of paint it is...

SPI makes a single stage Flat Black and their paint is Great to work with.

I have hot rod flatz hugger orange on my bed of my 72. I've had it on there since 2012 or 13. It sprayed easy, has been very durable, I'd use it again. In fact, I have a project car I'm planning to use their stuff on soon. My only problem was I didn't get enough so I only had enough for 2 coats. I should have got more and it would be fine. I put this on there to hold me over until I could finish the bed. I still haven't gotten to it though. I've used their black on a few cars and a truck and had good luck with all of them. I have used some of their metallic flatz and it went well too.

Nice looking truck DW. So how much did you buy? If I do my truck, it would be similar to yours, only I would not be painting the wide stripe down the side (and back) or the flat part of the bed, so I'd have a lot less surface to cover.

The stripe and bed will be gloss Red.

Here is my idea done in photoshop.

I think what happened was I thought I ordered a gallon but when I dug it out I had a quart. It was the day before a big show I wanted to take it to so I mixed it and shot it. This time I'll get a gallon kit to make sure I have enough to cover the car.

Wow, I can't believe that you got 2 coats out of a quart! You must have been spraying one fine mist!

And you didn't have to wear anything other than a typical respirator mask?

That's all I wore and I even sprayed it outside......... Their quart kit came with reducer and hardener so it's a little more than a quart. Still not enough for a longhorn bed though.

I’m looking at using John Deere blitz black as well. I was looking at the HotRod Flatz as well, but I’ve heard of durability issues and its quite a bit more expensive. The only advantage I see of the HotRod Flatz are the color options. The downfall of black is all the body imperfections.

I bought a rattle-can of the JD Blitz Black at the local dealer, and compared it to the Rustoleum Satin on a metal panel. Definitely like the Blitz Black better so far. Still have some more testing to do, but it really has the look I want.

I've usually run whatever color I like, then used a satin clear for the finish.
