First year for dual fuel tanks?
 

What was the first year that Chevrolet offer dual tanks, either as a dealer installed option, and then as a factory installed option?

Dealer installed - no specific year. I THINK factory NL2 RPO first year was 69 - but I don't have documentation to back that up. May have been 70... Hopefully someone else can confirm.

'73 was the first year for dual tanks. To me, dual tanks means two matching tanks. The first auxiliary tank on GM pickups was offered in '69 and is rarely seen. That was a rear mount tank. None were offered after '69 until '72 when it was on the driver side in front of rear wheel. Aftermarket tanks it's hard to say, but it was long before these trucks came out

good point dual vs aux - I was assuming aux since posted in this era. Thanks for clarifying the special rear 69 tank, I forgot!

I have a 72 with an Aux Tank on each side. Was that ever an option?

I have an auxiliary tank on my '72 that is mounted on the driver's side forward of the wheel.
I have never used this tank and don't know if it is empty or what...but what I like about it is that the fuel fill orifice is within the wheel well itself.
When the side of the box is cut (or both sides?) and a pipe/hose run up through the box floor with that cut stainless door on the box side...those are the ones I don't like.
I can live with them if I had to....but I don't like the look of it.

That said, I'm guessing the ones that fill from within the wheel well were more than likely dealer installed....thank goodness, lol.

I couldn't agree with you more on the wheelwell fill saddle tanks. Best solution to everything. I even prefer them to an NL2 factory setup, more gas, more hidden. Have had two trucks with them - still have one of those truck (and hung onto the tanks from the one I sold) :)

My 72 has 2 tanks one on each side ,fill from inside the wheel with a cross over switch in the cab drivers side on the floor. Only problem they have locking gas caps, no keys. Going to pull them out someday. Assuming it was a dealer installed idem
