beads and seals

65 Suburban

inner fender to firewall seal - the slot in the seal is thicker on one side. Thicker toward the engine compartment or the wheel well?

Body to fender Bead (inner to outer fender seal) - bead up and between the mating overlaps (inside) or down and to the outside (wheel well) ?

Pictures for both questions?

Paul

Lots of pics of closing panels, but not much on inner fender to firewall or inner fender to outer fender. Saw a mention of a seal between the inner fender and the radiator support. Anyone have any info on that?

Good info! Thanks, I am about ready to install my inner fenders and needed these as well to double check my own memory. I have all the rubber I think!

I have all the seals. I'm looking for info on installation. Those pics show the closing panel and the rear fender support. The only pic that shows any of the inner fender to firewall seal is the one that shows the steering boot. In that pic you can see the slot and loop in the seal. The rubber in the slot is thicker on one side than the other. Trying to find out whether the thicker side goes toward the engine compartment or the wheel well. No pics yet of the seal between the inner and outer fender. It has a bead in it. Trying to find out whether the bead goes on the engine compartment side or the wheel well side.

I just looked at my inner fender seal and it is the same thickness on both sides of the split.

Here is a picture I just took.

Thanks Roll the Dice. Must be a manufacturing thing. Any info on inner to outer fender seal/bead?

I can't find any information on inner fender to outer fender bead. I haven't seen anything other than what has been shown in the other threads. When I was looking at my inner fender, I only saw staple holes near the firewall on the inner fender. So in my mind, the only other seals are on the outer fender. Except where does #6 go?

roll_the_dice 07-21-2020 12:35 PM

Re: beads and seals

I just found this post...says #6 is "as needed" Whatever that means. I don't remember seeing anything like that on my truck.

Re: beads and seals

That's the one. Goes along the outer lip of the inner fender where the outer and inner fender lips meet and overlap My truck had many seals missing so I had nothing to go on.

Re: beads and seals

And the bolts on top that hold the fender on holds the seal on?

Re: beads and seals

Paul...I found some pictures that I think will be helpful to both of us. I was searching another project and saw this post...You can see the inner fender to firewall gasket and you can also see the gasket from inner fender to outer fender in the 2nd picture bottom right...makes more sense now!

Re: beads and seals

Thank You. That answers the question on the bead. It looks as though the
bead will need to round the corner of the inner fender lip so the last little upturn of the outer fender rests on the bottom edge of the bead. It doesn't appear to be compressed at all between the two. I think I'll put a little RTV along there and alone the edge of the two in the wheel well.

yes on the bolts.

Great! Now, I was looking closer...does gasket go here also where the red arrow is against the radiator support? I don't think so, but not sure.

I have seen replacement seals for sale for there, but I didn't end up buying them for my truck since I was trying to get it back together quickly

Do you remember where you saw them?

There's a complete set of inner fender to outer fender seals on page 94 of the truckandcarshop catalogue. Also saw the same kit at Classic Parts.
Classic Industries has the pieces for the inner to outer fender and inner to core support without having to buy the outer fender to cab seals if you already have those

Re: beads and seals

Thanks Christian...got some stuff ordered from Classic Industries. I already had some of the seals, so I got the front inner fender gaskets and a few other odds and ends. Much appreciated!

Re: beads and seals

So what's the consensus. Is there a seal between the inner fender and the radiator support(core support) and what does it look like? The inner to outer fender bead type seal? Seems like all of these seals will affect the shims needed to make things fit right.

I couldn't find much on them and didn't see anyone sell them separately, but I ended up buying these. I am not sure most people use them. They were not on my truck when I disassembled, but neither were several seals/gaskets.

Sure thing! I ended up not using them on mine, but when I do my full restoration, I will.

Yes, I believe there was. When I took my front end apart, I noticed a heavily deteriorated seal-like material where the inner fender bolts to the core support. I ended up not putting a seal back, so if you don't want to, you don't have to, but apparently, the factory did it

Old Radio Tech 07-22-2020 09:37 AM

Re: beads and seals

The bead seal came in a 25' roll, much more than is needed along the top of the fenders. Bead in or bead out?
