Made the Call-Hagerty
After doing some thinking and research reading several opinions, reviews, feedback and all the options I made the switch and insured my 71 4x4, 71 Chevelle and my 57 210 two door currently in the interior process to Hagerty. Insured for $18K, $28K and $20K respectively. The 57 coverage will change after completion and a professional appraisal. Usual classic insurance stipulations, not a daily driver vehicle, locked storage, pleasure and show car usage, no actual mileage restrictions. Drivers over age of 25, (I'm WAY over that compliance requirement, LOL). Total for the year coverage, $400. Was pleased with the switch and saved more than a fair bit of $$ from my normal auto insurance. Time will tell how it all goes. Hope I never have to find out the hard way.
And MOST importantly that is AGREED coverage amount, not STATED coverage which is a very important difference. |

You’ll love it, I’ve got Hagerty on my Camaro and my K20. They didn’t even care that my ‘72 lives in the drive way most of the year. I’ve got 10K and 25K agreed on the truck and car respectively and it’s about $900 a year. Mostly because of the Camaro being late model. The truck was only $200 a year when It was on the policy by its self. Moving to Hagerty cut a very substantial amount out of my car insurance Bill. The nice thing about it as well as the agreed value is that if something does happen and you have to go to a body shop, you get to decide where to take it and can work with them on OE parts. |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I've been with them for quite a while now and have no complaints. I have yet to test them with a claim yet. I hope I never need to, same as any insurance.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
Hagerty wanted $553 a year for my 49 valued at $35,000 as a casual driver. I have my truck insured through Arlington/Roe for $188 a year. I guess it just depends on the vehicle, state, and value.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I have Hagerty for my Classic Mustang and I love it. Tried to add my C10 but since it is under a carport they won't allow it. I did some research and apparently you can't get classic car insurance in California unless it is garaged (even if it is a project). Now I'm trying to convince the wife to get a 4 post lift so I can fit the truck with the Mustang.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I just switched to Hagerty for my 39 Chevy and it is $158 @ year
Guaranteed $20 K for the car ( of course they will insure up a lot more if you want ,,but if you do this then the cost per month for coverage goes up as well .. I choose for lower monthy payments and still get a big chunk of what ???? happens I get $750 for parts and towing paid up to 60 miles all the same stuff for Liability and Uninsured Motorists I do have it garaged and sent 10 photos for them to view I even had it towed 1 week after buying the inurrance and they paid the towing bill Not sure but If I remember correctly that a few years ago they would not give you a guarenteed price ,, I am happy with the deal I got with them |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I had my 70 Mustang insured with Grundy. Never had a problem and I think it was insured for 25 or 30K and it was $179 a year. But you have to garage it. They're kind of fussy about that.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I don't understand the broad range of prices people get. They have to be based on city/state/driving record, etc. My experience is much closer to IronHorse.
65 Mustang, 67 C10, and 68 Firebird I have valued at 25K, 15K, and 18K respectively for +/-$650/yr. Now that my wife has a new car and I have a big garage, I plan on adding our 2011 Mustang as well for another $250/yr. State farm still wants $600/yr for it. |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
Mine runs over $500 Haggerty for two trucks, one of which is only insured for 8k. It starts building on my 71 however, because it's insured too much considering it's still in pieces;) But I also insure the parts, and I highly recommend 1st salvage rights should they total it and you like your parts.

Any of the big insurrance companies that sell in every state has to cover Flood ,Tornado ,Hurricane and other major disasters ,soooooo for them to come out on top after paying so much for these types of losses ,,they charge more for insurances. I belong to a insurance company that insures for Oregon,Nevada, Idaho and Washington ,,maybe Arizona which none have any of them things I meantioned above that are catrostofic.. so therefore I saved like $400 a year when I quit AllSTATE some years |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
Regular insurance charges more because their risk is higher. I drive my newer cars a lot more than the old cars specially since I live in the snow belt so my classics are stored for 5 or more months.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
Think a lot of the variance in the costs of insurance is the higher risk of exposure in larger metropolitan areas. The number of cars on the local roads, factor in the number of accidents with that, car jackings and thefts....etc. It all comes into play with insurance companies. Same as your home owner and life insurance. They all want your premiums and hate to pay out when needed.
Living in a rather rural area and the limited exposure for classic cars and trucks to be driven helps the lower cost I'm sure. |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I guess the must be kept in a locked garage requirement is all about the theft coverage. So that affects all of us, including those who live where that is not such a concern. I know of plenty of damage done on classic vehicles while parked in that lockable garage. And if a big tree comes down on the building it's coming down on the vehicle. Buildings have their own insurance risks, too.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
It’s funny that they gave some of you guys trouble with building storage. I told the agent I worked with that my truck stays outside 75% of the time and she said, “that’s ok, I can take care of that in the system”. Maybe it’s because the agreed value on my truck is only 10K? I guess I could see them being a lot more picky with an agreed value of 30K+ as opposed to 10K.

Hagerty has changed A LOT. When I first signed up like 8 years ago, indoor storage was a requirement, they would not insure anyone under 25, the vehicle could be used ONLY for recreation (their website now actually states occasional drives to work are acceptable), and a few other things that are now no longer requirements. Edit. So I googled worst cities for autotheft thinking Detroit would be high up there. No. Bakersfield CA was #1. Greenville SC was #55 and Spartanburg SC (just up the road a bit) was #65. Guess I need to keep a better eye on my stuff. Detroit was way down at #91. This article is actually very recent: https://www.insurance.com/auto-insur...ar-thefts.html |

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
Holy cow. I did not realize they would insure un-tagged projects (if I read it correctly). I just checked on insurance for both of my 72 Blazers and my 68 panel and it is like $567 a year for all 3 @ $15k each. My homeowners will not cover them unless they are tagged. I might just have to sign up for this since it is so affordable

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
My 68 Firebird is an untagged project car right now.
|
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
Yea they will insure projects in various stage of build. It’s cool to me that they don’t even have to be together.
|
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I should probably insure my '67 project. I hardly think of it as a vehicle yet. But it is a completely rebuilt rolling chassis with 4/6 drop, rust free cab, and doors. And now it is inside a building, so I hope to start turning it into a truck. I have all the major parts, too. So it's value will increase with each install. I know someone who had a shortbed at the same stage of assembly sitting in a barn that burned down. It wasn't covered because it wasn't agricultural equipment, total loss.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I went with Grundy.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
My 70 Short Stepper , Rusty Blue is insured with Hagerty for $15000 and its in pieces in my shop . Have all the rust repaired and matched patina thanks to RussBuilt Streetrods , a member here from Tennessee who did Project Underhauling . I bump the value up as I go along .
As far as claims go , I have had 2 claims with Hagerty on 2 different toys and the whole process was very simple and pain free . One was a minor claim and one was a major one . I also have the extra towing deal they offer which covers all my daily drivers as well as the classics and also the salvage rights if a total loss . |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I change from Hagerty to Grundy when I got my 81 because of the mileage limitations. 5K a year was not enough (especially if I plan to be honest and I do). When I told Hagerty they had already approved my prioor truck to 10K, they said they had made a mistake, but would not budge on mileage. Talked with Grundy, and don't know if it is my area, vehicle type or what, but they didn't offer an unlimited mileage like the commercials use to have, but would increase the mileage to 10K. I think it is about $220 a year and they do want it in a covered, preferred lock storage area. Biggest difference I have seen, is like if I need a tow, I just get the tow truck and then file claim. Hagerty would get the truck for me.

Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
.
I've got Hagerty with stated value on my truck...No mileage limit. Surprised to hear of limits for you guys with Hagerty. However I must admit I really don't drive many miles so even if there were a limit on my policy, it might not be a deal breaker. From my reading here and elsewhere, it does seem Grundy is less $$ for somewhat equal sounding coverage ( very subjective and based on pure observation ). I've had one no-fault claim. It was handled to my satisfaction. -klb |
Re: Made the Call-Hagerty
I dumped Hagerty after 5 good years when I called to change the policy from North Carolina to Kansas. I had to call 3 times to get them to change it and then when I got my renewal it came as a North Carolina policy. I called and cancelled it, going with Grundy this week. Plus after several calls I still get my dad's renewal notices to my email, my account and his were never linked.
