This should be an all nighter

Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
With my luck, it would burn out onto the floor and I'd wake up dead!

Yup that’s why I go to Florida for the winter save my wood

Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
Yes, I do. But I also love the life I live.
I'll have to try that long log method. Seems like a great idea for when your saw won't start |

In the cold months (Oct - May) our lives revolve around the wood burning stove. It's almost like some sort of religious altar  Our little dog usually gets one or the other of us up at least once a night to go outside, so of course we feed the stove too. I have to admit that Polynesia looks pretty good this time of year. Remember Adam Troy ??? ;) |
Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
We go through anywhere from 3-5 cords a year depending on how cold it gets. The majority of it is soft wood.

Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
6-8 cords of mostly oak a year here. Normally at night when it’s gonna be lower than 20*, I’ll throw in an 8-10lb lump of coal with a couple half split logs to keep it warm all night. It keeps the house nice and toasty and will go all night without issue. I get the coal for $50-70/1000 lbs and that will last me the whole cold season. I’ve never tried hanging a tree out the stove before... don’t know that I’m going to start soon either.

Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
how much is a cord, it,s expensive here.
|
Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
I use four cords a year. Around here it's anywhere from $120 (real low) to $225 I think. I see $185 a lot. This would be hardwood, most commonly red oak or mixed
I know a few people who use outside wood furnaces. They can stuff some big stuff in those and forget about it a while. I heard recently they are illegal in this state. But it takes a neighbor complaining for anything to happen. They can put out some nasty smoke |
Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
I love a nice fire in a fireplace or wood stove. Not sure what it is, just a really comfortable feeling. But I would probably hate it if it was my main source of heat like you all have.
We have a gas fireplace with fake logs and it heats that part of the house up nicely. Sometimes when I get up early I just leave the lights out, turn on the fireplace and sit and watch the flames dance. And then the fan comes on when it gets up to temp. Semi pretending its a real fire goes out the window =) |

Interesting, I never really thought about that before. I do have to sweep the chimney a few times a burning season because the coal soot builds up in the spark arrestor screen under the chimney cap and will kill the draft. I could always just leave the logs out when I throw the coal in. The coal always goes over a bed of wood coals and will catch pretty quickly. |

Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
It's about what you grew up with I guess. I was raised in the city and don't apologize for that. We had a natural gas space heater when I was a kid and remember so well standing in front of it before jumping into bed and waking up to a cold cold floor in the mornings. The earliest home I can remember had a floor furnace in the center of the house. Yep, I sleepily walked across it barefoot, once, and burned the grid into my feet.
We never had a home with a fire place. They look nice but I never had the desire to do the wood work to have one. Actually I get tired of the smoke and smell of a camp fire over a weekend's time so I'm sure I wouldn't like to have that every day at home. But that's just my take on it. My folks bought a nice home with a fireplace 20+ years ago. Dad wouldn't use it and did not like the smell with his recliner parked right next to it even though they scrubbed the fireplace real good trying to remove that smell. He put in a gas log and was tickled as he could be with that. He said he carried enough firewood when he was a kid, no more. ;) |
Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
I have no idea how much wood we use in a season (most of the year, when it's not 95*). All I know is that it's a big fokking pile! Probably 6-8 cords or maybe more?
But we got a new stove last fall because our old one was falling apart, and it seems like we are using less wood from the pile. But although the cold started early, we have not had the extreme cold yet. It's been a dry open winter so far, except for all the snow we got in October and November. The fall before last I bought a semi-load of logs from the guy that hauled logs for the logging contractor that I worked for 20+ years ago. It was $1200 for 50K pounds of mixed dry and green, no guarantee of the cordage but probably 15-20. I burned some of that last year but so far this season I've been working through a bunch of smaller stuff that I cut green a couple years ago to clear along fence lines, etc. So I've still got most of that semi load cut into blocks and stacked in the yard. I split everything by hand every day as we use it, except for some that I keep ahead in reserve in case I get sick or hurt. |

Re: Ever get tired of putting logs on the fire
I hardly have any trees die on my land anymore. Must be all that CO2 making the forest so healthy!
We bought another 20 acres last fall and the upper half is a pine/juniper jungle. It's going to be a lot of work thinning it out, but the smaller trees don't yield much wood for the labor: more slash to get rid of than anything  Now they want you to sign your live away just to burn anything even with a foot of snow on the ground. I've got a huge pile down by the road that I just keep adding to. I keep waiting for the county to try to tell me I have to burn it ;) |
