Rattle can paint or? ('69 Lt. Blue)

My '69 GMC came with light blue paint with a white top. I just went down to the local paint shop to see about getting some spray paint for the hood I bought recently. I brought them the paint code (507) that I saw on the internet but they were clueless about what color it was and said I needed to bring a piece in with that paint on it. I had the truck sitting there at their front door but they could not help. The truck was repainted at some point, possibly in the 80s and it looks like the original color ("Light Blue").
Anyway, one of the guys told me it would take "3-4 cans" to do the hood at $40 each. Ouch.
Does anyone here have a line on some on-line paint that would do for this? It is a work truck and is currently a bit rough so I'm not looking for ultra high quality, just something to look normal on a driver. Thanks -BAAttachment 2274265 The color on the door. The fender and old hood (off a '68) are medium blue i believe.

There's a few places online that carry paint.
I have a local paint shop near me so I have never ordered from them.

Some of the online paints are a base coat and then clear coat. I have a local paint supplier that mixes up 524 hugger orange and it's dead on with a single stage paint. No clear coat needed. I have only used it in the interior like the wall where the gas tank mounts. It's an enamel, but dries very fast. The seller told me to paint in the morning when cooler for best results. Works great. It started at 14.95 a can, then 34.95, and last time I bought it at 34.95. I'll be buying a couple more cans shortly. I guess I can mortgage my house. Attached is a picture. Says it's SEM 61993 and a picture of the recipe. I bought a couple of cans at another supplier and apparently they mixed it by hand instead of a computer match. Tossed both cans. By the way I think on a large surface like a hood you'll have over spray issues with spray cans.

There’s a u tube were a guy goes to hardware gets some black and brown primer and has some paint mixed with correct color and patinas a bed then throws some rocks on it for the finish it’s the best I’ve ever seen maybe some one on here can find it and post it no one has ever done it better

I do a fair amount of touch up and patina paint jobs. I have had good luck with "automotive touchup LLC" Costs a bit much but colors have always been perfect and the can's spray pattern (fan) is really good.

Good luck with your hood. There are some excellent tips on the Paint and Body forum.

https://www.automotivetouchup.com/spray_paint.asp is what I used on my ashtray. it was spot-on, but probably not as cheap as you'd hoped. Paint is not cheap. this is not Home Depot generic blue paint. You're not going to have a choice but to pony-up, go without, or have a terrible match.

A guy in our local club painted a car with Nason single stage paint he used a roller for polyurethane floors and a couple of good brushes . He painted one coat let it cure for three or four days sanded with 600 paper and gave it another coat . Cut and buffed the next day and it actually looked good . Now this was a solid red wouldn’t do it with a metallic paint .

I should have watched that before trying to get my black 72 painted. Would of saved me lots of time. Throw some rocks, maybe a few wrenches at it that broke a few knuckles. Then cleared it…. :smoke:
But that guy has it down for what he was going for.

Thanks Getter-Done. I just ordered 3-11oz. cans of 507 light blue from express paint. They were $24.95 ea. so not bad at all. We'll see how it matches up (not a big deal). Thanks for the link. -BA

Thanks for all the tips and info. The hood isn't installed yet so I can just spray as it leans against a wood pile. I need to learn a bit about preps. The guy at the store said to use grey primer. First I need to finish sanding. I'll post up the results. Thanks again. -BA
