I've seen a few folks use studs. Last resort, weld the studs in place.
Makes it a pain to swap starters, but it can be done.
My buddy tells me starters are on their way out. New stuff will shoot a blast of fuel in a couple of cylinders and fire it off. Only obstacle right now is being able to inject directly into the cylinder, but there are a few direct injection gasoline engines in production, shouldn't be too long now.
