Battery relocation question

On my truck the 'charge' wire on the back of the alternator goes directly to the battery with out any splice or junction. I believe that is the way the factory did it. If the battery was moved to the rear of the vehicle you would need a (long) heavy gauge wire up to the starter, and the ground to the frame, but what about the alternator charge wire? Can it go on the starter, or should it be routed separate back to the battery? I just wanted to know what is the most effective way for the alternator to charge the battery.
