Brian, yes I have seen this done. It helps to have one of the engine tilt things too to even out the load (keep the cab from tilting one side to the other) where lifting from the top with the cherry picker 'push' type lift would allow the cab to find it's own center of balance. With chains 'lifting' instead of 'pushing' it up you kinda have some sway involved too.

I'm about to take my cab off too and I think I'm going to make one of the type above. 4x4 or metal under the cab roof pushing up. ..
