by far the best budget engine build that made quite a bit of power that I've ever done was the 408 I had in my truck when I first built it. such an easy combo and can be done super cheap. basically what I did is found a sbc 400 cleaned up the cylinders, stock crank, stock 350 rods (5.7), ordered a cheap set of pistons, and had set of stockish 300hp heads (041 casting), decent sized cam, and aluminum intake. all in all I had a little over 1000 bucks in the whole motor and I'm fairly sure i was getting 1hp per cubic inch. super cheap, a ton of fun to drive, and very streetable
like it was said before there is no substitute for cubic inches!
