I had a similar problem when I tried to put my trans crossmember back in, the frame rails were too tight - too narrow.
I took a regular scissor jack from any car and a 4x4 piece of wood. use the jack on the inside of the frame rail, open it up using the 4x4 to span the distance and it will spread the rails with little effort.
