The 230 and 250 look alike outside. The only clue might be from the "dress numbers" the digits stamped in the block on the machined pad aft of the distributor hole. The last 2 or 3 letters will tell.
Yes, either of those automatics will bolt right up to the L6 block, and work fine. The TH400 is heavier duty and will stand up to a BBC or towing. I had a TH350 behind a 454 in a 4x4 K/10 '67 Suburban, and it worked OK.
