It's been a little since i posted but I ended up re-configuring the location of the gas struts. I turned them the other direction to more mimic a tonneau cover and also got a little stronger rated gas strut. With those two changes the cover opens and closes with ease. I also mounted the spare tire carrier to the bedside. I still need to fab a support on the inside of the bed panel for extra support but that shouldn't be too difficult.
