Maybe the latch is part of the problem.
The striker has a flat bottom "shelf" with a contoured upper surface for the rolling latch to engage. I am going in to the second click but then maybe there is too much clearance from the latch part of the mechanism to the lower shelf. With the door shut completely, it will bounce up and down and bang on the shelf of the striker.
With the door open just a few inches, there is very little movement when forced up and down at the trailing edge.
I'll see if I can lower the rear edge of the door a bit by adjusting the hinges.
