67-72 with manual trans used a bellhousing mount starter and not block mounted. It is possible to use a later style gear reduction starter. Chances are the GM style gear reduction unit would work, but on my Jimmy I used a non-supported nose Denso style starter which works great.
Whatever parts store sold you the wrong part and wouldn’t take it back sux.
