Maybe third-world parts of South America have a better charging station infrastructure than we do in the USA. 
Or could it be the diesel-powered support vehicle has a DC generator? But that would never happen.  Certainly they wouldn't burn several hundred gallons of diesel fuel for this EV adventure.
