Who did you have build your carb???

The springs on the brake drums dampen vibration (however small they may be), already previously posted, allow for better brake operation, if thats possible w/ drum brakes, the springs ARE needed, couldn't hurt w/ heat dissipation either.

What rear is that, maybe particular to the GMC leaf spring pickups??? or heavy duty option???

Never ever seen one of those alternators, good find on spare.

I was at an NHRA drag race in Houston, Texas in 1990. There was a racer from your town. his name was Xenon Kotelko, the announcer enjoyed saying his name, and then the name of your city...
