They probably aren't any more fragile than an aluminum-case Muncie--both will break behind a lot of horsepower in a heavy car, or from simple abuse.
I put almost 100,000 miles on the one in my Suburban, behind a 290hp crate engine, and I wasn't always kind to it. Never a hint of a problem.
