O.K., now we're getting to the meat of the thing .

? When it cranks, is the starter noisy ? . if not your problem is simply the mesh of the Bendix and ring gear and I can tell you how to adjust it at home if it's a parallel two bolt one .

If it makes gnashing sounds when it's cranking, you have the wrong starter, it's fairly common on older rigs , there are two different Bendix tooth counts that I recall, not off the top of my head but this is one of those detail things that makes it so important to retain the old worn out part until the job is 100% done to your satisfaction .

I must have mis understood something you said earlier to think it was an i6 .

Same deal, many here have intricate knowledge of the SBC Chevy V8 engine so ask away and sort through the collected answers before taking the next step .
