I cut the rusty battery tray in half, then drilled out the spotwelds and pried off the tray leaving the two side pieces I needed:



This is the remains of the tray itself:



I cleaned them up on the wire wheel:



And then soaked them overnight in WD-40 Rust Remover Soak. It did a pretty good job, the line where part of it was not submerged is clearly visible:
