I can't offer any 'experience' for this exact conversion but have been invloved w/similar rear-end type swaps.

It seems your doing things right by maintaining consistency. Using a newer 8-lug disc rear rear is a simplified way to replace the current 8-lug housing & achieve your budget friendly 8-lug disc goal. The over-all width of the 2 different housings could be an issue (or may not be). You should still be able to haul anything the original 8-lug C20 housing was capable of hauling w/exception of a loaded trailer because of the 700r4 (not known to survive long when used in heavy, towing applications).
