I removed cut spring from my 83. I have drop spindles, and the spring where cut by the previous owner. One spring was weaker than the other. The truck was leaning. So I replace the springs with ones that were not cut. As for them rubbing, I could only say do you have the spring end toward the inside of the truck where the groove starts. I put them in by undoing the back of the control arm and not by removing the spindle, so that I can make sure that it is going in straight.
I would take lowering springs over cut springs anyday. They are more stable, cut spring become weak when cut and are unstable. Just my 2 cents.
