I'm a complete novice here where transmissions are involved with swapping parts. Was there any special tools required for the input shaft swap? For the shortening did a dremal + cut off wheel suffice for surgical cuts. I would love a 5 speed gear box behind my 250 for the exact reasons you described. Nice write up and thanks for taking the time post it.
