The 8.5" wide rear wheels have the same backspacing as the 15x7's had, 3.75". All of the extra width is on the face of the wheel. This allows for much wider tires, if and when I swap to the 73-80 rear fenders. They have a much bigger wheel well opening, and the fenders are also wider, the same as the width of the body. So tires like N50-15's will fit right on the 15x8.5" wheels, or I might even go bigger with 15x10's.
