Wish I knew for certain. I'd speculate that the double wall tops were sagging and required the owner of a CST to remove the rear panels before top removal (a pita) so GM tried a new design ahead of the 73 model year. Thus far the data shows that single wall tops were used for only a portion of the 72 MY and only on K5s built at flint.
