If this is any help, my 70 in stock condition had a resistance wire from the bulk head connector to the + terminal on the coil. Also attached to the + terminal was a yellow wire from the starter. What that did was on cranking the yellow wire had full 12 volts to go to the coil to help starting. after the engine was running the coil only got power thru the resistance wire. the - side of the coil went to the points. There was no resistor across the coil.
