You can connect an ohm meter between the coil - and ground. disconnect the coil + first. Rotate the distributor to check for open/close on the ohm meter. You can crank the engine to get the points just open and have enough wiggle room to rotate the distributor by hand, or place the ohm meter where it is visible through the window to see it while you engage the starter. it should toggle 0v/ovl.
