I had the same issues with my truck that you are having. After checking everything like timing, points, plugs and wires, I hooked a vacuum gauge up to the carb and found that I had a big vacuum leak...I replaced the carb base gasket with several gaskets and it still would not stop leaking, long story short I ended up replacing the intake manifold and it ran like a top.
