It's not the column thats the problem it is the box being in the way of the back end of the left exhaust manifold. You still have to move the box no matter what else you do, at least with any manifold I have seen.

As I said some guys install the engine offset to the passenger side to alleviate a bit of the clearance issues but a lot of guys don't like to do that.

Maybe someone will post a good photo of the box being moved over and how they did it. I followed an article in one of the magazines at the time but I did the swap in 1974.
