Here is the link to the insert that looks like the one I purchased. You tell them what brand and style of gauges you are using and they machine to fit.

I really cannot remember the exact thickness but it was near .25 inch. Each of the gauge holes was counter bored (?) about .125 so that the gauges set down into the insert. If making your own, I do not think the thickness is critical as long as it is thick enough to prevent flex, gauges do not have to be recessed either. Small gauges are 2 1/16 diameter, large 3 3/8 inches. I ordered mine with the brushed finish.
