FWIW, I owned many Chevelles and a Monte Carlo before I bought my truck. I didn't know the covers were metal. Mine are all plastic. I'm guessing it is a truck verses car difference. When I swapped the 3-speed manual out of the truck and replaced it with a th350, I used what I had - plastic. The truck doesn't care.
