In high school one of my buds built a rod outta a Stude pickup w/ a Chevy 283. He cut the frame too short & had the problem you are talking about. His solution to the problem was to mate the trans yoke directly to the rear axle yoke!
No kidden! The trans / engine moved up & down w/ the rear axle! Man things were simpler back then!
