All I can say is that I've done it and gotten away with it. Painted a big cargo van silver, single stage acrylic enamel, one or two panels at a time. For space reasons I had to break the job up to even make it possible. When done, you could not tell it was not shot all at once.
I've heard that I got lucky and this should not be attempted, especially with metallics, but hey, it worked!.
