As horse power is increased, driveshaft diameter gets bigger because of what is called " moment of inertia". Aluminum driveshafts were used because it is less weight in motion for a slight increase in fuel economy. Downfall with aluminum is any driveline slop will ring louder with aluminum versus steel. And a slight reduction in unsprung weight i think.
