Yes, that would be a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). I believe they were first used in these trucks starting around 1983 when equipped with cruise control. I think they were also used for the engine control system on 87+ trucks with fuel injection.

When the electronic speedometers were introduced, the VSS was moved down to the transmission where it took the place of the speedometer cable drive.
