Re: How long is 55-59 steering column

On aftermarket steering columns "cheaper" is not better. Go Ididit or Flaming River and be done with it or go with a factory oem column in good shape. There have been too many guys go with the cheap ones and then have to replace them with one of the good ones when they fell apart.

On the column length you want just enough sticking out in the engine compartment so the shift arm has clearance and you can comfortably attach the shaft to the joint that attaches it to the box.

On the inside you need the steering wheel you plan to use and it's adapter if it has one so you can figure exactly how far from the dash or the clamp under the dash the rim of the wheel will set to figure out how long the shaft has to be to get it to set at that spot. Nothing is more uncomfortable in these trucks than a steering wheel that is way too high or way too low.

48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
