I'm fortunate that so far all of my builds have been rust free so I rely on the factory E coat to protect the areas that I cant reach. For the accessible areas I use the same formula as the frame, etc. Start with scuffing the surface with coarse grit paper, then follow with Scotch Brite. From there I clean with brake cleaner, then coat with undercoating.
