GM was on a 400 kick with the release of the 400 SBC. It saved money to make one set of 400 badges that they could use to represent several engine options. It was merely a cost-savings decision to call everything a 400.

I love going to car shows and hearing guys argue over whether their engine is a 396, 400 or 402.
