Been there, done that. Either your sector gear stripped or the metal pinon gear rod broke. In my case, both have happened at different times. Sector gear I fixed. Had a local steering column specialist company fix the broken rod. They did on site repair for about $80.

When my ignition switch start contacts failed, wired around with a push button. The push to crank is simple, just wire the push button in place of the start contacts on the ignition switch. Turn key to the run position and push button to start. Turn key off to kill.

In your case, you would have to replicate all of the contacts on the ignition switch, not just the ignition run/start stuff.
