There is no such thing as a torque converter for a manual transmission....
A manual transmission uses a clutch and a flywheel
An automatic uses a torque converter and flexplate

I just re-read your post, I would have to agree with longhornman, it sounds like a carb issue.....I have a 250 in mine, and I am still fighting carb issues, if it is a factory setup, I would say swap it for a 390 2bbl and buy an adaptor from any autoparts store to fit it on your stock 1bbl intake (good for some additional grunt, and a better option IMO than spending time tinkering with the original 1bbl)
