First of all Welcome to the site! So we need a bit more info here. Is the truck new to you? What year? etc.
You are not supposed to engage 4wd on pavement.(you probably already know this)
You may want to make sure the gearing is equal front to rear. If someone has changed out a differential they may have changed the gearing.
Are you sure of the position of the 4wd shifter? Maybe you are really in 2wd when you think it is in 4wd? Just askin.
