Do you really need a choke down there in TX?
Up here where I live, It sometimes gets down into the freezing range, but not real often. The choke on my Chevy is blocked open.
When it's really cold, I just pump the throttle twice & then hold it about 1/2 way down. When I hit the starter, it generally fires right off. Sometimes, I admit, I have to crank it a bit; but not real often.

I guess not but why would it act like that? I mean, the choke seemed to work when I first put the carb on (idleing up on startup and then backing down when warm) and now not doin that at all.. Just makes me think that something is not quite right..
