As for your "rust bucket" that looks good to me as well, reminds me of how mine looked during the last 10 years previous to the 2009 big push to the end.
For what's it's worth my 68 panel had an exposed cap on the side before my restoration (it now has a tail-light filler) and I believe, like Long Roof said, the exposed cap is standard. Your filler door looks good though. Here's mine now.....
